Guadalajara is Mexico's second-largest metropolitan area and, for people earning in dollars or euros, one of the better value propositions in Latin America. Here is what a month actually costs, with the caveat that the exchange rate does most of the heavy lifting: in 2026 one US dollar buys roughly 18 to 19 Mexican pesos.

One thing the listings will not tell you: renting a normal apartment in Mexico generally requires an aval, a local guarantor who owns property in the city and signs for your debt. If you do not have one, your realistic options are furnished short-term rentals, Airbnb, or coliving.
Food
- Set lunch at a local fonda: $80–130 MXN — soup, a main, a drink and dessert.
- Tacos at a neighborhood taquería: $25–45 MXN each.
- Specialty coffee: $60–90 MXN for an americano or latte.
- Casual restaurant: $180–350 MXN per person with a drink.
- Weekly groceries for one: roughly $700–1,200 MXN if you shop at local markets.
Guadalajara punches far above its weight on food. The comida corrida — a fixed set lunch served between roughly 2 and 5 p.m. — is the single best value in the city and the reason many residents simply do not cook on weekdays.
Getting around
The Mi Macro Periférico and the light rail (Tren Ligero) cover the main corridors cheaply. Uber and DiDi are widely used and inexpensive by North American or European standards — a cross-city ride rarely breaks $150 MXN, and the airport run costs about $200 MXN. If you live centrally, in a neighborhood like Mexicaltzingo, you will walk more than you expect.
Internet and workspace
Fiber is widely available across the metro area, and speeds above 200 Mbps are normal rather than premium. Independent coworking memberships typically run $2,000–4,000 MXN per month. If your housing includes a coworking space, that is a line item you delete entirely — which is a large part of why the coliving math works out.
